Spotlight on Burning Man

The Burning Man annual festival has become a seminal event with attendance reaching over 60,000 people in 2014. Started twenty-eight years ago in San Francisco, the week-long event eventually moved to Black Rock City in Northern Nevada where it has continued to flourish. The gathering is often described as an iconic experiment in community, self-expression, and interactive art.

From their website:

The mission of Burning Man Arts is to change the paradigm of art from a commodified object to an interactive, participatory, shared experience of creative expression.

This dynamic mission combined with the grueling conditions of the windblown desert make these kinds of art projects unique in their ability to address multiple dimensions.

In addition to the yearly festival, the Black Rock Arts foundation promotes the arts globally with grants for artwork that embodies these same themes.

If your life is burning well, poetry is just the ash. – Leonard Cohen
